What is your first impression of a salesperson? Is it a middle age man with a cheap suit, coffee breath, bags under his eyes, hounding you to buy a car? What do you think of when you hear the word sales? Do you say to yourself, "I'm not in sales." or "I don't like to sell."
My friends the reality is YOU ARE IN SALES. You can call it the relationship business or whatever but you are in sales...and here is why. What is your profession? Do you work with people? Then you are in sales. You're selling your ideas on people everyday.
A great way to improve your sales is by going to the mall and Observing. Observe, Observe, Observe.
I was in the mall when a young woman about 22 yrs. old approached me. Initially I declined but when I passed her again, I said I wanted to hear her pitch. She was selling hand lotion and some sort of detox product that was from the Mediterranean Sea.
Her selling skills were great.
She greeted me with a warm smile and glowed with confidence.
She had me demonstrate the product. (Get the customer to use it and see the value)
I was impressed with the product, until I saw the price tag.
But she was determined to make the sale. After me saying no about 2 times she didn't give up. (Closing a sale without being too pushy is what separates great salespeople from good salespeople.)
She brought me over to the register and even gave me her corporate discount. I was impressed with her persistence, but much to the pleasing of hip national bank, I walked away.
She happened to be from Iran, which made me think.
Thank God, we live in America. This young lady was taking advantage of every opportunity she has over here. It makes me think...are we? The fastest growing population of millionaires in this country is not Americans anymore.
Take advantage of our Freedom and Be Your Best.
Happy 4th
So if you want to get better at sales, go to the mall and see what people are buying. Listen to people's sales pitch and learn

Do People Like You?
Do you ever wonder if people like you? Do you ever wonder if people are truly excited to see you? Would you like to find out?
Next time you meet someone and they greet you. Look at their eyebrows and eyes. If they go up then they are happy to see you. If not... get a new friend.

4 Tips for Networking
Grow Your Business and Yourself
1. Be service minded- See how you can help others. Be interested in them and they will take interest in you. "People don't care about your business, until you show them that you care."
2. Collect. Collect.Collect. It's not about how many cards you give out, it's how many you collect.
3. When people ask you a question. Answer it, don't jump into a 20 min pitch about your business.
4. Follow up. After the event go through the cards you collected and email them. See how you can help them.

Generation Y and Effective Communication
Ringtones, Blackberrys, I-Phones, Email, Skype, the computer and many more - There are so many ways of communicating with each other now a day, it is almost too hard to keep track. One of my concerns for Generation Y is improve Effective Communication Skills.
Let’s get back to Effective Communication.
Generation Y- Let’s Communicate!
70-80% of Communication is Listening and Understanding. Effective communication involves LISTENING. Most people when engaged in a conversation are so preoccupied at what they are going to say and are not even listening. Two ways to improve your listening skills…
1. Everyone you meet , call them by their first name.
2. While listening to the radio or television, occasionally mute the sound and repeat back what you just heard.
Hearing is the act of perceiving sound. Listening is concentration and focused awareness.
You vs. I
When talking to others, be aware of how many times you use the word “You” compared to the word “I”. People like to talk about themselves. Look at your emails and see the “You” vs. “I”
We like people who make us feel good about ourselves. We like people who Listen.

Got Goals Series 1 of 4
2009 is coming and so do those Goals!
A big two-story house with a Hummer and Mercedes parked in the driveway. A country home on four acres of land with a wrap around porch and a pond out back might be in your dreams. If this is your idea of a goal, you need to ask yourself two questions. Is my goal written down and how am I going to achieve it?
Time to make the early morning commute and for most of us it falls right around 22 minutes before we get to the office and for some of us it is even longer. The parking lot on the interstate or the multiple school zones can be a part of our morning routines. What are we doing in the car then? Talking on the phone? Eating breakfast? or listening to some morning talk show and how they are prank-calling people. Here are three surefire steps of focusing you towards your goals.
Step 1. Turn your car into Car University. We will spend about four to seven thousand hours in our car. That is over four years. Ask yourself right now, what do I want to learn? Some people use this time to learn a second language or work on their self-growth. Jim Rohn said it best, “Formal education will get you a job but self education will earn you a fortune”. There are a multiple of cds that contain just about every topic. They can range from becoming a better professional to strategies that help you achieve your own goals. Your local library has an array of valuable resources and the best part is that it is free.
Step 2. Focus on your thoughts. What are you concentrating on? Take a look around you. Everything created in the world was first conceived with a thought. Align your thoughts with your goals. Our thoughts are a powerful force that propels us to act. They are often overlooked and under appreciated. Think of your thoughts as a magnet. Whatever we mostly think of, we surround ourselves with. Be it materialistic objects or spiritual guidance. What do we want to attain in our lives? What do we spend most of our time thinking about? Do we spend most times worrying about trivial matters? A majority of people focus their thoughts on their current situation not on the direction they want to go. What goals would we like to accomplish? Can we actually see in our minds attaining it or is it just a wish? It is amazing that when we focus our thoughts and energy on what we want to accomplish, we see the progress being made. Focus your thoughts on what you want and where you want to be rather than your current situation.
Step 3. Hang around with successful people. We have heard this saying a million times I’m sure, but if you want to be a success, hang around people who are smarter and more successful then you are. It makes sense to associate ourselves with people who are going in similar directions. If you hang around with people who have no goals or no direction, no matter how many books or cds you listen to, they will have the greatest impact. They will hold you back from achieving your dreams. One of the hardest tasks on the road to success is cutting ties with old friends who are going nowhere. They might think that you are too good for them and that is exactly right. But don’t tell them that. Let no one hold you back from achieving your dreams. Just like the old saying goes “Birds in a feather flock together.”

Attracting a Generation Y Worker
Interesting survey that was conducted by the Robert Half International and Yahoo! HotJobs.
They polled gen y between the ages of 21 and 28 and asked them,
“What is your number-one career concern for the future?”
Top 3
Salary and healthcare/retirement benefits - 33%
Job stability- 26%
Career satisfaction- 23%
What is not mentioned that is a big factor is flexibility. They will not be slaves to their jobs like they observed from their parents.(baby-boomers)
Also ask your future Gen Y worker to write their own description of the job. This also helps you attract the right Gen Y Worker.

HR and Generation Y
I just came across an article about Jonathan Bond who was named Outstanding HR director of the year at the Lawyer HR awards 2008.
His HR strategy is based around three principles 1. Attract 2. Retain 3. Enable (Speaks Generation Y language)
He also includes 360 degree feedback for the parteners and one-to-one coaching (Gen Y Language)
Bond anticipates that Generation Y in the workforce will be a major challenge facing many companies.
I think Bond is already on his way to making the workforce more Gen Y proof by providing 360 degree feedback and more coaching for employees. This is what this generation wants to see happen.
